Home Infrastructure Owners | Ontario Dig Authority Mapping Coverage for Underground Infrastructure

Maintaining Accurate Mapping Coverage

Mapping provided by Underground Infrastructure Owners is an important part of Ontario’s notification and damage prevention system.

UIOs are notified of locate requests when the dig area overlaps with the mapping coverage they have provided. Accurate mapping helps ensure the right UIOs are notified and helps reduce missed or unnecessary notifications.

When Mapping Must Be Updated

UIOs are required to update their mapping coverage within 30 days of new underground infrastructure being placed in the ground.

UIOs must also validate their mapping coverage at least every 180 days if no changes have been made.

If mapping changes are made, Ontario Dig Authority should be notified of the updates within 2 business days.

How to Submit Mapping Updates

If a mapping update is required, email your updated mapping files to: IAS@OntarioDigAuthority.ca

Ontario Dig Authority works with its mapping partner, Planview, to process mapping updates. Most mapping file types can be used.

Before mapping updates are made live in the system, they must be validated through Maps on the Web. Ontario Dig Authority will contact you when the update is ready for validation.

If you need help accessing Maps on the Web, contact IAS@OntarioDigAuthority.ca for support.

Types of Mapping Coverage

Mapping coverage may be defined or undefined.

  • Defined mapping coverage identifies the specific areas where a UIO has underground infrastructure.
  • Undefined mapping coverage is broader and may result in over-notification.

UIOs are encouraged to work toward defined mapping coverage where possible to improve accuracy and reduce unnecessary notifications.
